Determination of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) from karstic coastal aquifers is important to constrain hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. However, SGD quantification using commonly employed geochemical methods can be difficult to constrain under the presence of large riverine inputs, and is further complicated by the determination of the karstic groundwater endmember. Here, we investigated a coastal region where groundwater discharges from a karstic aquifer system using airborne thermal infrared mapping and geochemical sampling conducted along offshore transects. We report radium data (223Ra, 224Ra, 228Ra) that we used to derive fluxes (water, nutrients) associated with terrestrial groundwater discharge and/or seawater circulation through the... |

Artificial reefs (ARs) are deployed worldwide as they are expected to support fisheries management. While the underlying mechanisms remain widely debated, production was recently determined as the most probable cause of increases in fish biomass. Changes in fish biomass in a temperate AR system were investigated from December 2008 to November 2015 by considering seven distinct functional groups, and isotopic functional indices were used to identify how these changes may have affected organic matter (OM) fluxes. Contrasting patterns of change were observed between functional trophic groups, highlighting that combining the biomass of all species present in a community is inappropriate for assessing AR-induced effects. Benthic sedentary species predominated... |

Most demersal fishes undergo a dispersal phase as larvae, which strongly influences the connectivity among adult populations and, consequently, their genetic structure and replenishment opportunities. Because this phase is difficult to observe directly, it is frequently simulated through numerical models, most of which consider larvae as passive or only vertically migrating. However, in several locations, including the Mediterranean Sea, many species have been shown to swim fast and orient. Here we use a Lagrangian model to study connectivity patterns among three Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and compare simulations in which virtual larvae are passive to simulations in which oriented swimming is implemented. The parameterization of behavior... |

Increased oligotrophication is expected for oligotrophic areas as a consequence of ocean warming, which reduces diffusive vertical nutrient supply due to strengthened stratification. Evidence of ocean oligotrophication has been, thus far, reported for the open ocean. Here we reported oligotrophication and associated changes in plankton community metabolism with warming in a pristine, oligotrophic Mediterranean coastal area (Cap Salines, Mallorca Island, Spain) during a 10 years time series. As a temperate area, there were seasonal patterns associated to changes in the broad temperature range (12.0.28.4.C), with a primary phytoplankton bloom in late winter and a secondary one in the fall. Community respiration (R) rates peaked during summers and showed... |

As part of its nuclear program, E.D.F. put the C.N.E.X.O. in charge of the ecological study of a list of sites that had been considered for the implantation of nuclear power plants on the Mediterranean coast: PORT-la-N0UVELLE South, PORT-la-NOUVELLE North and FLEURY-sur-AUDE. The aim of this study is to compare, from an ecological point of view, the different sites during critical periods of the annual cycle: summer and spring. This report summarises the results of the two campaigns (ECOLION l and II) conducted on the area located between the Cap d'Agde and the Cap Leucate, and including the three studied sites. The study analysed the physicochemical parameters and the primary and secondary pelagic productions, and includes a qualitative and quantitative... |

Two international research cruises on board of the research vessel 'Ichthys' the first one in Aug-Sept 1971, and the second other in June-July 1972, have shown the reproduction of Thunnus thynnus, T.alalunga, Auxis thazard and Sarda in the surroundings of the Balearic Islands. The observations were made on the planctonic stages of these spp and on the physico-chemical and biological conditions of the environment. Some data were also collected on the presence of juvenile or mature stages of these fishes and on their fishery. |

Extractable organic copper using C18 Sep-Pak cartridges was investigated in seawater after laboratory experiment showed that the (C18 Sep-Pak) cartridges were reliable, in open and coastal waters with normal levels of dissolved organic carbon, for the separation of a specific fraction of organo-copper complexes.Given that the Sep-Pak cartridges retain the hydrophobic fraction of the dissolved organic matter, this extraction technique was applied for studying the characteristics of this particular hydrophobic dissolved organic copper fraction (hDOCu) in the north-western Mediterranean waters. Surface distribution of hDOC is influenced by organic matter input from the river Rhone and its estuary as well as the physical processes affecting the primary... |

The Var turbidite system is a small sandy system located in the Ligurian Basin. It was deposited during the Pliocene-Quaternary in a flat-floored basin formed during the Messinian salinity crisis. The system was fed through time by the Var and Paillon canyons that connect directly to the Var and Paillon rivers. It is still active during the present sea-level highstand. Two main mechanisms are responsible for gravity-flow triggering in the Var turbidite system: (1) mass-wasting events affect mainly the upper part of the continental slope, in areas where volumes of fresh sediment delivered by rivers are highest, and result from the under-consolidation state of slope sediments and earthquakes, and (2) high-magnitude river floods resulting from melting of snow... |

After obtaining full-coverage swath bathymetry data in 1995 and very high-resolution acoustic profiles in 2002, four slides at the Balearic Margin of the Eivissa Channel in the western Mediterranean Sea were revisited in 2004 when side-scan sonar data were collected using a MAK-1M deep-towed acoustic system. These new findings, higher in resolution than those for the swath bathymetry, show two main features previously undetected within these submarine landslides: (1) a series of step-forming inclined and detached slabs oriented perpendicular to the slide movement and located in the uppermost part of the slides, and (2) arcuate regular positive ridges oriented also normal to the slide movement and located in the depositional lobes of some of the slides. The... |

56 samples were collected from 14 stations along the Spanish coast, the North African coast, the Balearic Islands and Sardinia. 60 species of diatoms were recorded made up mostly of tychopelagic and benthic forms; these were far more abundant than the Dinophyceae of which only 22 species were recorded. 6 species of phytoplankton were dominant and represented similar to 70% of the total samples. The average content of chlorophyll a at depths of 1-70 m was 0.35 mg /m super(3), that of chlorophyll b was 0.15 mg/m super(3) and that of chlorophyll c was 2.20 m-S.P.U./M super(3)/hour. The highest level of chlorophyll a corresponded to regions of very low phosphate levels and the number of cells and species were at a maximum for an incident light of 10-15% and at... |
